Facilities Map

We added a facilities map using Google Maps. The link is in the menu bar above and to the left. I will have to play with it some and get the map to zoom out to get a better initial view for everyone. As we have time we can add other facilities to the map. This should make it much easier to locate things. Also, the map points should show up in Google Maps so if someone searches say “WVU Arena” it should come up with our map. This will make it easier for people to locate equine facilities within West Virginia. If you have any ideas please let us know!

Today’s Meeting

Today we had our year end general meeting in Wheeling at Hoss Restaurant.  Our next meeting, which is our annual meeting, will be Sunday, March 20, at Quintets in New Martinsville, WV from 1pm to 3pm (lunch at noon).  New officers and board members are elected at the annual meeting.  Nominations are being accepted for positions until the end of this month (January 2011).

Our tentative list of events for 2011 includes:

  • March/April – Gelding Clinic, possibly in Marshall County (western part of the state)
  • August – Training clinic in Reedsville, WV
  • September/October – Fall for Horses in New Cumberland, WV

Our tentative list of upcoming meetings include:

  • March 20 – Quintets in New Martinsville
  • May 15 – Wheeling, location TBD
  • July 17 – Coopers Rock picnic

We are looking for ideas for doing a gelding clinic in March/April.  We are seeking those that would be interested in sponsoring the clinic and would also like to hear from those that may be interested in participating.  We are also seeking a vet to work with us to provide the service at a reduced rate (note that we are a 501(c)3).

Furthermore, we are looking to setup a gelding assistance fund that would aid non-professional equine owners in gelding their stallions.  Again we will need sponsors to assist with the cost as well as ideas on details concerning the program.  This program would help reduce the unwanted horse population within West Virginia.  Also, since geldings are typically easier to handle as they mature, it also assists with keeping owners safe that may otherwise not have their stallions gelded due to cost or lack of education.

Please let us know your comments on anything mentioned here.  You can use the comments on the website (link below) or send us an e-mail at info@wvequineassoc.org.  Keep checking the website and/or Facebook for definite times and locations for our upcoming events and meetings.

Vet Clinic Beaver, WV – RSVP ASAP

The Raleigh County Horsemen’s Association is looking for people that would be interested in participating in a vet clinic on Saturday, April 9 in Beaver, WV.  You can visit their website for more information.  Also, more information from them follows:

Do you have a vet that comes to your barn to do your coggins and vaccines? If not, Veterinarian Dr. Lynne Sparks has kindly offered to do a vaccine and coggins clinic if enough horses are going to come on Saturday April 9th at RCHA/Crow show grounds at 199 Country Club Dr.  Beaver, WV  25813. Bringing your horse to the clinic will prevent you from having to pay an expensive farm call fee and it will likely be cheaper than hauling them to a vet if we get enough to RSVP. If you promise to bring your horses to the clinic for vaccines and/or coggins if we have it, please let me know ASAP. If we do not have enough horses registered to come to the clinic by Feb. 3rd, there will not be a clinic and this great opportunity will be lost for all. Please pass this message on to all who may be interested. You will not be allowed to take your horse to a camp or show or other event at RCHA or anywhere else without a negative coggins report that is less than 12 months old.According to WV Dept. of Ag, it is extremely important to vaccinate all your horses yearly at least against Rabies, Tetanus, Equine influenza,  Eastern and Western Encephalitis,  and West Nile Virus and consider vaccinating against other diseases. These diseases may be more common and deadly than you might think. For example, rabies is not curable and is fatal and there have been at least 6 confirmed and documented cases of rabies in horses in WV in  the last 10 years according to State Veterinarian Gary Kinder.

To RSVP for the Vet clinic, email selenalucas@suddenlink.net or call 304-673-7629 with the name and breed of the horse coming, what you think it will need done at the clinic, and your phone number in case we have to cancel due to lack of interest.RSVP before Feb. 3rd. If we do not have enough horses registered to come to the clinic by Feb. 3rd, There will not be a clinic and this great opportunity will be lost for all.

Pony shot near Pittsburgh

On December 16, 2010 a pony mare (with foal at side) was shot and killed in PA outside of Pittsburgh.  While this is out of our area, it is close by.  The other concerning part of this story is that these farm shootings have been ongoing in that area.  This from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (click the link for the full article):

State police at Greensburg are seeking information about the shooting, which occurred between 6 and 9 p.m. Thursday at the farm off Route 981, just south of the village of Pleasant Unity.

It is sad we live in a world where this sort of behavior happens.  Unfortunately with the large area that farms typically cover, you cannot totally prevent acts such as this.  However, you can make your farm more secure.  Many of the tips for theft prevention on Stolen Horse International’s website will greatly aid in securing your farm.

Merry Christmas!

It’s been a busy, yet productive year for everyone.  We have learned a lot, made new friends, and managed to pull off a few more events.  This year we did a Kids Fun Learning day, training clinic, and our Fall for Horses expo.  Every year I wish we could have pulled off a few more events; however, I’m very thankful for what we did do.  More importantly, I am very thankful for you, our members, those that volunteer your time to help out with what WVEA does.

I would like to take a couple paragraphs to stress the importance of the events we put on and how you make a positive impact.  Every day people are injured, horses suffer, and worse: people and horses are killed.  Many times people get called stupid, cruel, and dangerous.  If you know me, contrary to popular belief, I am an optimist.  I just happen to see things that can go wrong.

What goes wrong is that people don’t know.  What goes wrong is when we have kids around horses that are not taught things like don’t wrap the lead rope around your hand, how to perform an emergency stop, and where not to stand around horses.  Other things that go wrong is when people don’t know that horses need to consume up to 2% of their body weight in hay a day, need 1% of their body weight in clean water a day, and need to be attended by a farrier every 6 to 8 weeks.  That’s where we come in; that’s where YOU come in.

Uniting and Educating West Virginia’s Equine Community” – WVEA’s slogan.  Each time you help with our events, each time you show your support by attending, and financially helping us by paying your membership dues, you are supporting this cause.  I am proud of those that helped put on the events we did this year and in the past.  You have been a part of helping people and equines stay safe and happy.  You have brought people together to learn and make new friends.

For 2011 we have some exciting things we are working on.  First, we want to have another training clinic at the WVU Reedsville arena and continue the Fall for Horses event in New Cumberland.  Second, we are looking to expand our events to possibly include a gelding clinic.  We are also considering a gelding assistance fund.  If we can be successful with these events, we want to continue to offer programs to aid the community.  Many state equestrian groups are now offering these types of assistance programs, in addition to hay, veterinary and farrier, and rehoming assistance programs.

The past couple years have taught us all a lot.  Most of all, they have taught us to be thankful.  Thankful for having a good job and/or the finances needed to keep our horses living a content and healthy life, while enjoying what we do.  Unfortunately some haven’t been so lucky, and the result is hardships on honest, hardworking people and their equines.  In the future, if we can provide relief, we can make a larger difference.

I encourage those that have ideas for new events to let us know.  More importantly, I challenge you to aid a hand.  If you can help us find sponsors for a gelding clinic and/or a gelding assistance fund, that would be terrific!  If you have ideas for other programs and could get us sponsors and work out the details, we would love to hear from you.  If you can lend some of your time, we can use you.  Send us a message at info@wvequineassoc.org or call me at 304-782-0446, or talk to any of our officers or directors.

Speaking of officers and directors, I would like to take another paragraph to thank them.  Thanks to Rachel Paris (Vice-President), Tish Hemsley (Secretary), and Tina Jenkins (Treasurer).  Thanks to our directors Fred Zara, Kathy Beagle, Kim Bennet, and Cherie Germain.  You all have done wonderful work this year, and I thank you for your dedication!

Also, you may have noticed by now we have been a little behind in getting things mailed out this year.  Most of that has been my fault as I have struggled to balance work, our farm, and WVEA.  We made a couple changes at our November meeting which should help out.

First, we will be mailing membership cards out in March for all members.  If you have paid your yearly dues by March, you will get a laminated card.  If you pay your dues anytime during the year, we will hand write you a card so we can give you one right then and there.  It takes time to print and laminate cards so it will save us time to do it all at once.

Second, we have just had our website redone to allow for easier and quicker updates.  This will allow me to post articles such as this in less time, from wherever I am.  It will also allow others to post articles to help out with content.  What this means for you is more news, more often.

Third, we have decided to schedule our meeting dates and locations two meetings ahead.  This will allow us all to reserve our schedules far in advance.  We are going to try to stick with the third Sunday of every other month for general meetings.  If we can stick to a schedule, it should allow everyone to better make time for attending.

Fourth, we have decided to extend 2010-2011 memberships through 2012.  Because we didn’t get membership cards out this year and we missed a few newsletters, the board decided it would be best to extend memberships into next year.  This also gives some of you a financial break during these rough times.

Again, thank you all for your support, and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  I am excited to see what 2011 will bring for West Virginia equestrians and their equines.

Matt Jenkins
President, West Virginia Equine Association

Riding Accidents – Numbers

A recent survey from Saddle Up Safely reveals that most riding accidents are preventable.  This is where education of equestrians on the safety of their equines becomes critical.  For West Virginia, that’s one of our primary missions – education.  This is an excerpt from an article referring to the survey:

Of those injured, 23 per cent had quit riding for an extended period. Of the 221 who were injured, 66 per cent said it was due to rider error.

Our study and a number of others have shown that many injuries can be prevented or reduced in severity by practicing safe horsemanship,” says Fernanda Camargo, assistant professor and equine extension specialist at the university’s College of Agriculture.

Every year, millions of Americans participate in horseback riding activities.

In 2007, 78,000 people were seen in US emergency rooms due to horse-related injuries. Nine thousand of those were admitted to the hospital for further treatment.

Read more about the survey at Too many preventable riding accidents – survey | Horsetalk.co.nz – International horse news.

If you have ideas for improving safety among West Virginia equestrians, please let us know!

Mailings

Ok, this past weekend Tina and I stayed up until midnight packing envelopes with t-shirts, Christmas cards, membership cards, and newsletters. Monday I managed to get out of work long enough to stand in the long line at the postal office to mail everything out. So, that means everyone that was a member this year should get t-shirts and your membership card. Also, if the shirt is the wrong size, or if you want another for your spouse, kids, friend, etc. shoot us an e-mail at info@wvequineassoc.org and let us know.

Thanks everyone for your support this year! My article in the newsletter will be posted here on the website in a couple days after everyone has received the printed newsletter. That will give everyone a good idea of everything going on for next year.

Keep warm!
